Study and Training Support Loan debt for an employee

Set up or remove STSL/HELP/HECS for an employee and how to see the calculated values

Updated over a month ago

The ATO has changed from separate tax scales for HELP/TSL/SSL and Financial Supplement loans (SFSS) to a combined tax scale for Study and Training Support loans.

Refer to the ATO website for more information:

In the Employee record, the TFN Declaration window has one question (Question 10) where you nominate if the employee has a Study and Training Support Load Debt or not. When nominated STSL tax will be calculated using the STSL tax scales.

If an employee requests to pay additional STSL, set up a tax adjustment in Additions and Deductions (Payroll, Maintenance, General). The STSL and the tax adjustment value are both included in the total tax amount.

To change an Employee's STSL:

  1. Go to Payroll, Maintenance, Employee, Employees.

  2. Edit the Employee.

  3. Select Tax Details.

  4. Click on TFN Declaration.

  5. For Question 10. Study and Training Support Loan Debt, tick to apply or untick to remove.

  6. Complete any other required fields.

  7. Click OK to save the tax change.

  8. Click OK to save the employee.

To see the STSL Tax values:

  1. Go to Payroll, Enquiries, Employee Enquires.

  2. Enter the Employee and the date range.

  3. Click View.

  4. If any STSL Tax Deductions have occurred, you will see the STSL Description with a value. These values will be included in the Total Tax value reported to the ATO via STP.
