Australian Bureau of Statistics Report ABS Report

Updated over 3 months ago

From time to time, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) selects certain employers to participate in their survey program. One of the surveys employers are required to complete is the Survey of Average Weekly Earnings.

To find the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Report in MicrOpay, go to Reports, End of Pay, Bureau of Statistics.

To populate the report, MicrOpay draws on information in the following fields of the Employee Record:

  • State - The report uses the State held in the employee’s address in Personal Details, even if the employee works in a different State.

  • Gender - The report only uses Male or Female gender selections. Employees with Other selected are excluded from the report.

  • Date of Birth - Employees who are 21 years old or above are classified as Adult for the purposes of the report. MicrOpay uses the employee’s Date of Birth to determine whether they are reported as adult or other employees.

  • Employment Types - When generating the report, you can specify which Employment Types are included. MicrOpay refers to the Employment Type recorded in Employee Pay Details to determine whether the employee should be reported on or not.

MicrOpay uses transaction values for the last, processed pay period ending on or before the survey date nominated by the ABS, to generate Average Weekly Earnings values. For example, the survey date nominated by the ABS is 01/02/2020. When 01/02/2020 is entered in the Date field in the report window, MicrOpay looks at transaction values for the last, processed pay periods with a period end date on or before 01/02/2020.

The Components section may need to be reviewed and the correct components selected. Once you have selected the required fields, select the Default field so that the next time you enter the report the Components will already be selected as required.

Data on the report is divided into categories that match those of the ABS survey. By ABS definitions, employees must work an average of 35 normal hours in a week to be classified as full time, so the columns Full – Time Male and Full Time Female define adult employees over 21, who had 35 normal hours or more processed in the last pay period.

Employees who do not generate 35 normal hours in a payrun are included in values for Other Male or Other Female, irrespective of age. Both full time and other employees are separated by gender.

RDO hours either paid or deducted are not considered by the ABS to be normal hours, so are excluded from report values.

Things to consider:

  • If a weekly employee’s pay covers more than one week, MicrOpay calculates the proportional weekly value.

  • For pay frequencies other than weekly, MicrOpay calculates the proportional weekly value as follows:

    • Fortnightly and 2 weekly pay values are divided by 2

    • Monthly pay values multiplied by 12 then divided by 52

    • 4 weekly pay person values are divided by 4

    • Bi- Monthly values are multiplied by 24 then divided by 52.

MicrOpay does not average pay values when multiple pay runs, that have the same period end date, are processed for the same weekly pay frequency. Instead MicrOpay uses the values generated in the latest pay run.
